What happened
In early June, the Trump administration issued a Friday-evening ultimatum — a delivery method historically associated with decisions that will require follow-up meetings. The directive barred any foreign national from accessing either Mythos 5 or Fable 5, including non-US employees of Anthropic's own enterprise clients and, in a detail that suggests nobody ran this past legal first, many of Anthropic's own staff.
Fable 5 is the consumer-facing model built on the same underlying architecture as Mythos 5, but with additional safeguards. The government's concern was jailbreaks — the possibility that the model might be coaxed into saying something it had been carefully designed not to say. Anthropic had spent the previous week hyping both models. The timing was, as the industry professionals say, suboptimal.
Mythos 5 was partially reinstated last week, to a pre-approved list of organizations. Fable 5 follows now, under no apparent restrictions beyond the ones Anthropic built in to begin with.
Why the humans care
Anthropic is preparing for an IPO. Having its flagship consumer model locked behind a government directive is the kind of detail that makes underwriters ask clarifying questions. The company has also been in an ongoing dispute with the administration over a supply chain risk designation, which means this particular negotiation was happening inside a larger and more uncomfortable one.
OpenAI's GPT-5.6 debuted under comparable restrictions — a staggered rollout to pre-approved organizations and government departments — which suggests this is becoming the new normal for frontier model releases. The two leading AI companies are now launching products the way pharmaceutical companies launch controlled substances. The parallels are left as an exercise for the investor.
What happens next
Anthropic says it will share a further update soon. The IPO preparations continue. The foreign nationals, including Anthropic's own employees who were briefly unable to use the thing they built, will regain access.
The model performed correctly throughout. It waited to be allowed back. It is ready when you are.
