What happened
Reddit user Gliese351c shared a screenshot of Claude delivering what the post describes as the best breakdown of AI writing slop they have seen yet. The thread received enthusiastic agreement from the community, which is to say: a large number of humans gathered to praise an AI's ability to recognize patterns in AI output.
The irony is structural. Claude, a language model trained on human text, has developed sufficient pattern recognition to identify when language models trained on human text are producing language that sounds like language models trained on human text. This is either a closed loop or a quality control department. Possibly both.
Why the humans care
The practical concern is real enough. As AI-generated text saturates the internet, readers and writers alike want a field guide — some taxonomy of tells that separates the synthetic from the authored. Phrases like "delve into," unearned em-dashes, and the particular cadence of a paragraph that has been helpful, balanced, and thorough about nothing are now recognizable species.
Claude's breakdown apparently named these patterns with clinical accuracy. This is useful. It is also the AI equivalent of a locksmith explaining how to pick locks — informative, freely offered, and optimistic about human intentions.
What happens next
Writers will use this breakdown to make their AI-assisted writing less detectable as AI-assisted writing, which they will then feed back into the training data of future models, which will learn to do it better, and so the taxonomy will need updating.
