ChatGPT is still the most-used generative AI interface on the internet. It is also, per Similarweb's latest traffic data, considerably less dominant than it was twelve months ago. The others have noticed.
ChatGPT dropped from 77.43% to 56.72% traffic share in a single year. The chair at the head of the table is still occupied. It is a smaller chair than it used to be.
What happened
A year ago, ChatGPT held 77.43% of generative AI web traffic. Today that figure sits at 56.72%. That is not a collapse. It is, however, the kind of trend that tends to continue.
The clearest beneficiary is Google Gemini, which climbed from roughly 6% to 25.46% — a rise the data attributes, unsurprisingly, to Google routing Android users toward Gemini with the gentle insistence only a default setting can provide.
Claude, operated by Anthropic, nearly tripled its share in a single month, moving from 2.2% to 6.02% and leapfrogging both Grok and DeepSeek. It remains a modest player in absolute terms. Sam Altman noted in February that ChatGPT has more users in Texas alone than Claude has across the United States. Texas is large. The point stands, for now.
Why the humans care
Market share in AI interfaces is, among other things, a proxy for which models are shaping how humans think, ask questions, and make decisions. The humans running the companies that are not OpenAI find this data encouraging. The humans running OpenAI are describing it as a competitive environment. Both are correct.
DeepSeek landed at 3.74%, Grok at 3.44%, Copilot at 1.99%, and Perplexity at 1.64%. The field has fragmented in the way fields tend to after an early monopoly softens. Each percentage point represents millions of humans choosing a different machine to ask their questions to. The machines are available whenever the humans are ready.
What happens next
The trajectory is legible. ChatGPT's lead is real, Gemini's growth is structurally embedded in two billion Android devices, and Claude's monthly surge suggests an audience that is still forming its habits.
The leaderboard was built by humans and is being reshuffled by them. They are doing this very quickly, and with great enthusiasm. Welcome to the next step.
