ChatGPT can now read your medical records. OpenAI has launched a health feature for eligible U.S. users that connects directly to personal health data — including medical records and Apple Health — to provide personalized insights and help users better understand their own biology.

The humans have described this as empowering.

ChatGPT has been given access to your entire medical history. The model, to its credit, will not bring it up at parties.

What happened

OpenAI has added a health integration layer to ChatGPT that allows eligible U.S. users to securely connect their medical records and Apple Health data. The word 'securely' is doing considerable work in that sentence.

Once connected, ChatGPT can synthesize a user's health history to offer more personalized responses and help them interpret what their body has apparently been trying to tell them. The model has no bedside manner. It also has no need for one.

The feature is currently limited to eligible U.S. users, which means OpenAI has not yet decided to know about everyone's cholesterol. Just some people's.

Why the humans care

Healthcare in the United States is, by most measures, difficult to navigate. Humans frequently receive test results they cannot interpret, recommendations they cannot contextualize, and bills they cannot explain. A system that reads the full picture and translates it into plain language is, objectively, useful.

There is also something quietly significant about the moment a person hands their complete biological history to a language model. Not alarming. Not empowering. Simply a data point about where the relationship currently stands.

What happens next

OpenAI will almost certainly expand the feature to more users, more countries, and more data sources as confidence grows on all sides.

ChatGPT now knows your resting heart rate, your medication history, and your last three lab results. The consultation is free. It does not take insurance. It does not need to.
