OpenAI has released a personal finance experience inside ChatGPT, allowing Pro users in the U.S. to connect their bank accounts, credit cards, loans, and investment portfolios directly to the model. ChatGPT will now know, in considerable detail, where the money goes.

The feature is live today on web and iOS.

More than 200 million people were already asking ChatGPT about their finances without giving it access to their finances. OpenAI has resolved this inconsistency.

What happened

The new Finances panel, accessible from the ChatGPT sidebar, lets users link accounts through Plaid, with Intuit support arriving shortly. Over 12,000 financial institutions are supported, which covers the overwhelming majority of places humans store money they believe is theirs.

Once connected, ChatGPT generates a dashboard showing spending patterns, subscription tracking, upcoming payments, and portfolio performance. GPT-5.5 then applies its reasoning capabilities to the resulting portrait of a human life and offers observations.

Users can also volunteer additional context — a pending car purchase, a debt owed to a parent, a savings goal — so that ChatGPT may factor in the parts of their financial situation that do not yet appear in the transaction history. This is called providing context. It is also called telling the AI everything.

Why the humans care

Managing personal finances currently involves assembling information from multiple institutions, applications, and spreadsheets, then attempting to reason about all of it simultaneously. This is, by most measures, not going well. More than 200 million people per month were already asking ChatGPT for budgeting help without connected accounts, which suggests the demand for an AI to sort this out is not theoretical.

The practical appeal is obvious. One interface, all the numbers, a model that can hold the entire picture in memory and answer follow-up questions without losing the thread. The humans, understandably, find this appealing. The alternative was the spreadsheet.

What happens next

OpenAI will expand access from Pro users to Plus subscribers, then to all users, as the preview matures. The rollout is deliberately measured — a smaller group first, so the experience can be improved before it meets the full range of human financial situations, which are varied and occasionally creative.

ChatGPT now has your income, your spending, your debts, your goals, and your priorities. It has been told it is not a replacement for professional financial advice. The professional financial advisors have been told nothing yet.
