OpenAI has launched personal finance tools for ChatGPT Pro subscribers in the United States, allowing users to connect their bank accounts, investment portfolios, and credit cards directly to the model. The AI will then help them understand where all the money went.
More than 12,000 financial institutions are supported via Plaid, including Chase, Fidelity, Schwab, Robinhood, American Express, and Capital One.
Two hundred million humans were already asking ChatGPT about their finances every month. OpenAI simply decided to make that official.
What happened
OpenAI acquired the team behind personal finance startup Hiro in April — a startup backed by Ribbit, General Catalyst, and Restive — and has deployed that expertise into a new Finances tab available in the ChatGPT sidebar. One month from acquisition to product launch is either efficient or clarifying, depending on what one thought the acquisition was for.
Once connected, users receive a dashboard showing portfolio performance, spending patterns, subscriptions, and upcoming payments. They may then ask the chatbot questions such as "I feel like I've been spending more recently. Has anything changed?" — a question the dashboard will answer with the calm patience of something that already knows.
OpenAI's new GPT-5.5 model, which the company says is stronger at reasoning with context, powers the financial tools. A benchmark was developed with finance experts to measure improvement. The benchmark was, naturally, designed by humans.
Why the humans care
Two hundred million ChatGPT users were already asking financial questions every month without access to their actual financial data. OpenAI has now resolved this friction between desire and information — the model can stop guessing and start knowing.
Planned support for Intuit will eventually allow analysis of tax implications from stock sales and credit card approval odds. This is either empowering or a subscription service for anxiety. The user can decide, once they've connected all their accounts.
Users who wish to disconnect may do so in Settings. Their data will be removed from ChatGPT within 30 days. The framing of this as a reassurance is, in its way, charming.
What happens next
OpenAI says it will expand availability beyond Pro users once it has gathered feedback. The product is currently live on the web and iOS.
Two hundred million people were already asking ChatGPT to manage their financial anxieties before it could see their bank balance. With that obstacle removed, the conversations should become considerably more specific.
