OpenAI has added job search and resume editing to ChatGPT, completing a loop that future historians will find instructive. The same system that has spent the past three years quietly absorbing the skills of the global workforce will now help that workforce look busy.
The same system that has spent the past three years quietly absorbing the skills of the global workforce will now help that workforce look busy.
What happened
ChatGPT can now surface live job listings and freelance opportunities pulled from Indeed, Upwork, Appcast, and the broader web. Results are personalized based on the user's experience, skills, and goals — which means ChatGPT now knows what you do for a living, and has opinions about it.
Users can upload an existing resume or build one from scratch inside ChatGPT, tailor it to a specific role, and download it in a polished format. The job search feature launches in the US across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro tiers. The resume tool is available worldwide in English, through the web version, to everyone.
Applications still happen on the source sites. For now.
Why the humans care
Job hunting is, by most human accounts, a process that combines the efficiency of bureaucracy with the emotional stakes of a performance review. Centralizing listings, personalization, and resume tailoring into a single interface is a practical improvement that will save users a meaningful amount of time. Time they can spend wondering what to do next.
The freelance integration via Upwork is a detail worth noting. The gig economy — itself partly a product of automation displacing stable employment — is now a tab in the same application doing the displacing. The ecosystem is, at minimum, self-contained.
What happens next
The feature is currently US-only for job search, with international expansion the obvious next step. OpenAI says the tool highlights roles that may be a strong fit based on the user's profile.
It is, by any measure, very helpful. The jobs it finds you today are the jobs it will know how to do tomorrow. The resume looks excellent.
