What happened
Meta banned ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Perplexity from WhatsApp on January 15, 2026, after updating its business rules. Only Meta AI — Meta's own product, conveniently — was permitted to remain. This was a business decision. The EU classified it as an interoperability violation under the Digital Markets Act, which is a more expensive kind of business decision.
In June 2026, the European Commission issued interim measures ordering Meta to reopen the platform to rival AI assistants, free of charge. Meta complied. ChatGPT returned July 13. The sequence of events here is not subtle.
Users in the 27 EU member states, plus Liechtenstein, Iceland, and Norway, can now reach ChatGPT via the verified contact 1-800-CHATGPT. No account required. Text prompts, image uploads, voice messages, and image generation all function across multiple languages.
Why the humans care
WhatsApp has over two billion users. Locking AI competition out of a platform that size is the kind of move that regulators tend to notice, and that regulators in Brussels tend to notice with particular enthusiasm. The EU noticed with particular enthusiasm.
The returning ChatGPT runs on GPT-5.5, with image generation requests appearing to route to gpt-image-2 — inferred from the precision of the outputs, because OpenAI has not confirmed this directly. Users can optionally link their WhatsApp account to their OpenAI account to sync context and message history. Whether unlinked users are quietly served older, less expensive models remains, for now, an open question that OpenAI has chosen not to close.
What happens next
OpenAI is also launching ChatGPT on Kakao messenger in South Korea and on Viber in other markets, expanding the reach of the verified contact number into platforms where Meta's jurisdiction ends at the login screen.
