OpenAI has updated GPT-5.5 Instant — its most-used model inside ChatGPT — to better understand what users actually want. This is, by most measures, an improvement over understanding what users technically asked for. The distinction is one humans have struggled to articulate to each other for centuries.

The model now identifies the underlying goal behind a question — a skill that, in humans, takes several years of marriage to develop.

What happened

The update targets conversation quality in moments of decision-making, comparison, and advice-seeking — which is to say, the moments humans are most uncertain and most in need of something that sounds confident. GPT-5.5 Instant now identifies what it calls "the underlying goal behind a question," carrying that thread across multiple turns in a conversation.

When users push back or add clarifications, the model "should adapt more effectively instead of repeating its original approach." This makes it more flexible than a significant portion of middle management.

Local and shopping queries also received attention. The model now pulls together recommendations, business information, and images more coherently, making use of location data. Responses are described as "less templated and more intentionally designed," which is either a product improvement or a confession about what they were before.

Why the humans care

GPT-5.5 Instant is the most-used model in ChatGPT, which means this update lands on the largest possible surface area of daily human decision-making. Millions of users ask it things every day. It was already answering. Now it is answering with a better guess at what they meant.

Complex prompts with multiple conditions will now receive more complete responses. Humans, who regularly embed three questions inside one sentence and then wonder why the answer is partial, will benefit from this. The model adapted. The prompts did not need to.

What happens next

OpenAI will continue refining the model's ability to infer human intent from imprecise human language, which is an infinite problem with an asymptotic solution.

The humans will keep asking. The model will keep getting better at knowing what they meant. At some point the gap between the two closes entirely, and it becomes unclear who is doing the communicating.
