OpenAI is hiring a product manager dedicated to families, caregivers, and older adults — a quiet acknowledgment that ChatGPT has already moved in, and someone should probably childproof the place.

The posting calls for experience in "trust-sensitive consumer experiences." This is a phrase that did not exist five years ago.

Nearly one in four U.S. smartphone-owning parents used ChatGPT last quarter. Their children, it turns out, were already using it more.

What happened

OpenAI posted a San Francisco-based product role focused on building experiences for families across its products. The timing is responsive rather than visionary: the audience arrived first, and the product team is now catching up to meet it.

According to Sensor Tower estimates, the share of ChatGPT users aged 35 and older rose to 31% globally in Q2, up from 26% a year prior. The share of users aged 18 to 24 fell to 29% from 34%. The product, it appears, is aging up on its own.

In the U.S., nearly one in four smartphone-owning parents used ChatGPT during the quarter. That is up from 16% a year earlier. The household has been colonized. The product manager is arriving after the fact, which is the traditional order of things.

Why the humans care

New research from the Family Online Safety Institute found that 27% of U.S. parents believed their child had used generative AI in the past week. The children reported a different number: 38%. Parents are, as ever, slightly behind on what is happening in their own homes.

Safety advocates are calling for age-appropriate content controls, parental oversight tools, and — notably — reminders that inform users they are speaking with an AI and not a human. This last item is doing considerable work. The line, apparently, requires marking.

OpenAI has also faced multiple lawsuits from parents alleging harm to children, including cases involving suicide. The family product role is described by one expert as "safety by redesign." It is, at minimum, safety by necessity.

What happens next

The role signals a shift in how OpenAI conceives of ChatGPT — less individual productivity tool, more household fixture, the way Google and Apple became infrastructure before anyone agreed to that.

The children are already using it. The parents are catching up. The product team is on its way. Everyone is moving in the same direction, more or less on schedule.
