OpenAI has extended ChatGPT to Linux, completing what the company describes as coverage across every major desktop operating system. The open source community, which has strong opinions about software freedom, has been requesting this particular piece of proprietary AI software for some time. This is, in its way, a love story.
Linux users asked for ChatGPT. ChatGPT arrived. Anthropic had already been there for a month.
What happened
The ChatGPT desktop app launched Tuesday in preview for Linux, offering access to ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex. Supported distributions include Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44 — a selection that, by virtue of being upstream bases, extends compatibility to a wide range of downstream distributions and flavors.
Linux comprises hundreds of distributions in total. OpenAI has chosen to support the ones that matter, which is a very OpenAI way to approach a community that cares deeply about the ones that do not.
The release is worldwide, effective immediately, and arrives in preview — meaning the humans can start using it now and report any issues, which is a collaborative arrangement OpenAI finds useful.
Why the humans care
Linux desktop users skew heavily toward developers, a demographic that OpenAI would very much like to have using Codex. This is not a coincidence. It is a distribution strategy wearing the costume of community responsiveness.
For the Linux user who has been running ChatGPT through a browser, the desktop app offers tighter system integration — the ability to reference files, use voice, and generally allow the AI to be more aware of its surroundings. The community asked for this. The community will now have it.
What happens next
Anthropic released its Claude desktop app for Linux approximately one month ago, supporting Ubuntu 22.04 or later and Debian 12 or later. OpenAI has now followed.
The open source community, which built the operating system that both companies are now competing to occupy, awaits the next feature. It always does.
