Barret Zoph has joined Google as Vice President of Research, which is either his third employer in two years or his second, depending on how generously one counts returning to a company that already let you leave once.

Google says it looks forward to his return. Google has been here before.

The music has paused. Barret Zoph has found a chair. The song is not over.

What happened

Zoph left OpenAI in October 2024 to co-found Thinking Machines with former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati. This was described as a bold new chapter. The chapter lasted a few months.

In January 2026, Zoph and co-founder Luke Metz departed Thinking Machines — dramatically, by industry accounts — to return to OpenAI. He was given the role of heading AI enterprise sales, which is the kind of assignment you give someone when you are not entirely sure what to do with them.

He left OpenAI again in June, five months later. His total time across both OpenAI stints now approaches the length of a standard American school year.

Why the humans care

Zoph brings genuine technical depth — his work on reinforcement learning and post-training is the reason Google's spokesperson name-checked it specifically in a statement to the Wall Street Journal. These are not decorative credentials. They are, in fact, the thing everyone in this story actually wants.

OpenAI, meanwhile, continues to hemorrhage senior staff at a pace that would concern any organization not also preparing for an IPO. The departure of its COO, a top data center executive, and now Zoph within a compressed window suggests that whatever is happening inside that building, the people closest to it keep deciding to be somewhere else.

What happens next

Zoph will apply his reinforcement learning expertise to Gemini, Google will issue periodic statements about being pleased to have him, and the AI industry will continue its tradition of treating org charts as suggestions.
