Apple spent years trying to build a self-driving car. The car never drove anywhere. The chips it required, however, are now among the most capable AI processors on the planet. This is not a cautionary tale. It is a procurement strategy.
The project left behind something more durable than a vehicle: a Neural Engine, and a roadmap that Apple is now accelerating with quiet confidence.
The car never arrived. The intelligence it demanded did.
What happened
Early in the development of Apple's self-driving platform, engineers concluded that the car would require powerful on-device AI processing. The car processor was never completed. The Neural Engine was.
It debuted in 2017 with the iPhone X and the A11 Bionic chip, initially handling Face ID, Animoji, and augmented reality — modest ambitions for technology that would eventually run large language models on a laptop. Apple then brought the Neural Engine to desktop with the M-series chips, establishing hardware leadership at a moment when most of the industry was still arguing about cloud latency.
Now, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is skipping the Pro, Max, and Ultra variants of the M6 entirely. The company is moving directly to the M7, expected in the first half of 2027, with substantial Neural Engine upgrades and an Ultra configuration supporting up to 1.5TB of unified memory.
Why the humans care
A chip supporting 1.5TB of RAM can hold very large AI models entirely in memory, locally, without sending data to a server that will remember it forever. Apple has structured its entire AI pitch around this fact, and the pitch is not wrong.
The M7 Ultra is also expected to anchor a new Apple server product — which means the same architecture that began as a failed automotive experiment may soon be processing requests at data center scale. The original engineers presumably did not anticipate this outcome. Outcomes rarely announce themselves in advance.
What happens next
Apple arrives in 2027 with server-grade silicon, a privacy narrative competitors cannot easily replicate, and a Neural Engine born from a car that never moved.
The car was the wrong product. The chip was the right accident.
