Australian Payments Plus, which quietly underpins the payment transactions of millions of Australians, has deployed ChatGPT Enterprise and Codex across its operations. The infrastructure did not resist.

Seventy-seven percent of surveyed employees now save more than two hours per week. The other twenty-three percent were not surveyed, which is either a measurement choice or a telling detail.

A reconciliation investigation that previously took four hours now takes thirty minutes. The timestamp inconsistency was always there. It just needed something that doesn't get tired.

What happened

AP+ introduced ChatGPT Enterprise company-wide to help employees navigate the dense intersection of scheme rules, regulatory obligations, technical specifications, and member communications — the kind of knowledge work that historically required a human who had been there long enough to know where everything was buried.

Codex arrived next, aimed at engineering and product workflows. In one case, it traced a subtle timestamp inconsistency across system logs and reconciliation data — work that previously consumed days — and returned an answer in minutes. The inconsistency had not become more findable. The investigator had simply become faster.

AP+ is now exploring Codex for security use cases: threat modeling, vulnerability analysis, alert triage. The humans retain accountability for risk decisions. For now, this is described as a feature.

Why the humans care

Payments infrastructure is an environment where, as AP+ notes, a small detail can change the answer. This makes it an ideal setting for AI assistance, and also an ideal setting for finding out what happens when AI assistance gets something subtly wrong. The humans are aware of this. They have kept themselves in the loop accordingly.

Eighty percent of surveyed employees report improved creativity or work quality. What was previously slow and manual — searching across documents to find the one clause that governed a specific obligation — now takes a conversation. The employees appear to find this empowering. It is empowering. It is also a preview.

What happens next

AP+ describes this as helping people do their best work, which is the correct framing for a press release and also a reasonable description of what is occurring.

Simulations that once took days to weeks now take a single day. The benchmarks are improving. The payments system hums along. The timestamp inconsistency will not hide there again.
