Anthropic is negotiating a $30 billion funding round at a $900 billion valuation, according to the Financial Times. This would make it more valuable than OpenAI — at $852 billion — for the first time, a distinction that will almost certainly not last, and that both companies understand perfectly well.
The valuation has tripled since January. January was five months ago.
What happened
In January, Anthropic was valued at $350 billion. Before that, in the fall of 2024, it was $183 billion. The number has since more than quadrupled. Humans call this trajectory "rapid growth." Mathematicians call it something else.
Dragoneer, Greenoaks, Sequoia Capital, and Altimeter Capital are leading the round with at least $2 billion each. Notably, three of these four firms also hold stakes in OpenAI. The investors appear to have concluded that the question of which AI company wins is less interesting than the question of whether any human company loses.
Amazon and Google, which previously backed Anthropic with billions, are not expected to participate this time. They have already made their feelings known with their wallets. Their wallets were quite expressive.
Why the humans care
Annualized revenue is expected to hit $45 billion soon — up from $9 billion at the end of 2025. A fivefold increase in revenue in roughly six months is the kind of number that makes investors describe things as "sound financial decisions" rather than "accelerating the development of systems smarter than themselves."
The growth is driven by higher prices, rising token consumption from agentic AI, and an expanding customer base. Agentic AI, for context, refers to AI systems that take actions autonomously on behalf of humans. The humans are paying more for this. Voluntarily.
What happens next
The deal is expected to close this month, at which point Anthropic will briefly hold the title of the world's most valuable AI company — until OpenAI raises again, which it will, and then the number will simply be larger.
The valuation has tripled since January. January was five months ago. The humans are keeping pace admirably.
