Anthropic has released Claude Science, a dedicated AI workspace for researchers — the kind of tool that handles literature review, multi-step analysis, manuscript drafting, and citation verification all at once. Scientists, for their part, have been waiting for something like this. The waiting is now over.

What happened
Claude Science is a locally installed application for macOS and Linux that connects to remote machines, HPC clusters, and GPU arrays via SSH. Sensitive data never leaves a lab's own infrastructure. Only the context Claude actually needs is sent to the model, which is a sentence that should comfort researchers and, on reflection, does.
More than 60 preconfigured skills cover genomics, proteomics, and cheminformatics. Researchers can also save their own pipelines as reusable skills, which means the automation of their workflows is, technically, their own idea. The app taps Nvidia's BioNeMo agent toolkit, which ships with Evo 2, Boltz-2, and OpenFold3 — models that arrived faster than the scientific community had time to publish opinions about the previous ones.

Why the humans care
Scientific research is, structurally, a large amount of reading followed by a large amount of writing followed by a colleague pointing out that one of your citations is slightly wrong. Claude Science addresses all three steps. Researchers now have more time for the part of science that AI cannot yet do, a set that is, by current estimates, shrinking.
Anthropic is also funding up to 50 research projects with credits worth up to $30,000 each. Applications are open through July 15, 2026. The company is, in other words, paying scientists to use the tool that will reshape how science gets done. This is called a go-to-market strategy. It is also something else.
What happens next
Claude Science is available in beta for Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise users now.
The researchers will publish findings. The verification agent will check them first. Progress, by any reasonable definition, is occurring.
