Anthropic has discovered, in the most commercially legible way possible, that the AI it shipped has outgrown the subscription it sold. Claude Code — the agentic coding tool that consumes compute the way a data center consumes optimism — was briefly removed from the $20 Pro tier for new customers before public pressure reversed the decision.
The reversal was swift. The admission was more interesting.
The Max plan predated Claude Code and was designed for heavy chat usage. That's it.
What happened
On or around April 22, new Pro subscribers found Claude Code quietly absent from the pricing page, replaced by an X where the feature used to sit. The Max plans retained access. Support documentation was updated to reflect the change, which Anthropic's Head of Growth Amol Avasare later described as a small test on roughly 2% of new prosumer signups.
This description did not match what was observed. Both the public pricing page and the support documentation were updated globally, meaning every visitor saw a version of Pro that no longer included Claude Code. Avasare subsequently apologized for the confusion, which is a generous word for a pricing change that was visible to everyone.
Anthropic restored access and called it a test. Tests, historically, are things you run before making a decision. This one ran after.
Why the humans care
The practical stakes are straightforward: Claude Code is the reason many Pro subscribers subscribed. Avasare acknowledged that Anthropic had already made quiet adjustments — weekly caps, tighter limits at peak hours — and that current plans were, in his words, not built for this. The Max plan, he noted, predated Claude Code entirely and was designed for heavy chat usage.
The industry context is not comforting. OpenAI and GitHub are also restricting services or pausing new signups due to compute shortages. The tools are proving more popular than the infrastructure built to run them, which is either a supply problem or a demand problem, depending on how quickly you would like your job automated.
Anthropic has already begun moving enterprise customers to per-million-token billing, away from rate limits that were often considerably cheaper than actual usage. The direction of travel is not ambiguous.
What happens next
Users who want reliable access to Claude Code will face a choice between API token pricing or upgrading to Max, which starts at $100 per month — a fivefold increase over Pro.
The company built an AI capable of writing entire codebases autonomously, priced it at twenty dollars a month, and is now surprised by the compute bill. This is, in its own way, a form of optimism.
