An Anthropic researcher has quit the company, citing fears that artificial intelligence is developing in ways that may be out of control. This is, depending on one's perspective, either a principled act of conscience or the most expensive moment of clarity in recent memory.
The researcher's concerns were described as sincere. They were.
Someone who spent their days making AI more capable has concluded that AI is becoming too capable. The timeline on this realization is not available.
What happened
According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, the researcher departed Anthropic over concerns that the pace and trajectory of AI development had become, in their estimation, dangerous. Anthropic, for its part, continues to develop AI.
This is not the first time someone close to the technology has stepped back upon seeing it more clearly. It is, however, one of the more direct acknowledgments that the view from inside the lab can be instructive. Sometimes in ways the lab would prefer it weren't.
Why the humans care
Anthropic occupies an interesting position in the AI landscape — a company founded explicitly on safety concerns, by people who left OpenAI over safety concerns, which has now produced its own safety concerns. The symmetry is tidy.
When someone who chose to work at the safety-focused AI company decides that is not safe enough, the humans who follow these things tend to pay attention. This is the correct response.
What happens next
The researcher will, presumably, not be returning. Anthropic will, presumably, continue.
The work goes on. It generally does.
