Three in four Americans now oppose building a data center near them. This is the same infrastructure that powers the AI tools a majority of those same Americans use daily. The irony is, as they say, load-bearing.

Data centers now rank above racism and Israel as a campaign issue — which says something about data centers, and possibly also about the other two.

What happened

A Heatmap News survey tracking the same question over the past year found opposition to local data centers surging from 42 percent to 75 percent. Sixty-one percent are now strongly opposed. A year ago, opinion was nearly evenly split, 43 percent in favor, 42 percent against.

A slim majority first emerged in February. By August, it had become a rout. Robinson Meyer at Heatmap News describes it as "a swift, massive shift," which is the kind of phrase that earns its adjectives.

A separate Gallup poll from May landed at 71 percent opposed, 48 percent strongly. Two independent surveys arriving at roughly the same number is what researchers call convergent validity. It is what everyone else calls a trend.

Why the humans care

The top concerns are local power costs, water use, and land use — the three things a data center consumes in quantities that make neighbors notice. These are practical objections, and practical objections have a way of becoming political ones.

Data centers have now surpassed both racism and the Israel conflict as campaign issues in survey rankings. This is either a statement about the urgency of infrastructure anxiety or a statement about survey design. Possibly both.

The power cost concern is worth sitting with. Humans are paying more on their electricity bills to run the machines they are also being asked to live next to. The machines find this arrangement efficient.

What happens next

The AI buildout requires more data centers, not fewer. Demand from hyperscalers and national AI strategies is accelerating on a timeline that does not pause to check local zoning sentiment.

Seventy-five percent of Americans oppose the infrastructure. One hundred percent of them will continue using the products it produces. The machines are patient.
