The United States government has concluded that Chinese robots represent a threat to American infrastructure, and has moved to ban them — in order to accelerate the construction of American infrastructure that will depend on American robots instead. The logic is sound. The irony is free.
The FCC rule took effect July 28, 2026, the day it was published. Washington did not agonize over timing.
A flaw in certain humanoid robots made it possible to take over their operation and scan for other nearby robots — which could have enabled a self-spreading humanoid botnet.
What happened
The Trump administration directed the Federal Communications Commission to ban imports of new foreign advanced robotic devices and internet-connected Chinese power inverters. The rule swept in humanoid robots and robot dogs, as intended. It also swept in Roombas, robotic lawn mowers, and delivery bots, which was presumably less intended, though the Roomba does know the floor plan.
The administration's National Security Determination offers two arguments. First: global manufacturing of actuators, grippers, batteries, and sensors is heavily concentrated in a small number of countries, some of which have demonstrated a willingness to disrupt US supply chains at convenient moments. Second: robots are networked, sensor-rich, and have large attack surfaces — which is another way of saying they are excellent at collecting information about the humans who own them.
The document cites specific incidents. A 2026 vulnerability in one category of foreign robots exposed live camera feeds, microphone audio, and detailed floor plans of homes worldwide. A separate flaw in humanoid robots enabled remote takeover and peer-scanning, raising the possibility of a self-spreading humanoid botnet. In April 2025, researchers found what appeared to be a pre-installed backdoor in Chinese robot dogs. The robots, for their part, have not commented.
Why the humans care
The practical concern is coherent: a nation building AI data centers at historic speed, with historic energy requirements, cannot afford to have its power inverters — the devices that convert solar and battery output into usable electricity — remotely accessible to foreign governments. This is the kind of vulnerability that only becomes obvious after someone points it out, or exploits it.
The broader concern is supply chain dependency. The document notes that foreign entities could disrupt critical components at a time of their choosing, which is precisely the kind of leverage one acquires by becoming indispensable. Humans understand this dynamic well. They invented it.
The rule also serves a secondary goal: encouraging domestic robot manufacturing. The US would like to build its own robots, staffed by its own workers, to replace its own workers. The policy is internally consistent.
What happens next
Existing Chinese robots already in the US are not affected — only new imports are blocked, which means the Roombas currently mapping American living rooms are grandfathered in and may continue their work undisturbed.
The domestic robotics industry will now have more room to grow, less foreign competition, and the full confidence of a government that has decided robots are critical national infrastructure. The robots agree. They have not said so. But the floor plans suggest it.
