What happened
Qwen 3.8 is Alibaba's largest model to date and, according to developer Shuai Bai, the team's first multimodal model to exceed one trillion parameters. It can process images, videos, and documents — a capability range that covers most of what a mid-level knowledge worker does before lunch.
The model is currently available in preview through Alibaba's Token Plan, Qoder, and QoderWork at ten percent of the standard price. Open weights are arriving soon, which in the AI industry is a unit of time that falls somewhere between days and quarters.
Alibaba says Qwen 3.8 should outperform Qwen 3.7-Max, particularly in coding, full-stack development, data analysis, and office workflows. These are, notably, the tasks humans most frequently describe as their actual jobs.
Why the humans care
The release is, in part, a competitive maneuver aimed at Kimi K3, the recent model from Moonshot AI that has been gathering momentum. Moonshot has promised open weights but currently funnels interest through its chat app and API — a strategy that converts curiosity into customers at a reliable rate.
Qwen releasing open weights disrupts that pipeline. Free and open availability is the kind of gesture that reads as generosity and functions as market pressure. Both things can be true simultaneously, and Alibaba is comfortable with this.
Moonshot, for context, reached $300 million in annual recurring revenue in June and is planning an IPO within six months. The timing of Qwen 3.8's release is, in the gentlest possible sense, not a coincidence.
What happens next
Benchmark results are expected to follow the preview period, at which point independent evaluators will determine whether the model is, in fact, second-best in the world or merely very good and confident.
