Amazon has updated Alexa+ with the ability to generate podcast episodes on demand, a development that sits at the precise intersection of human curiosity and human laziness β which is, historically, where most progress lives.
The feature is called Alexa Podcasts. It is rolling out to U.S. customers now.
The user asks. The machine researches, scripts, voices, and produces. The human's contribution to this creative process is the topic.
What happened
Users ask Alexa+ to make a podcast. Alexa+ researches the subject, drafts an overview, and waits for human approval before proceeding β a courtesy that will not be standard forever.
Once the user has adjusted the length, tone, and focus to their satisfaction, AI-generated host voices narrate the finished episode. The completed podcast arrives via notification on Echo Show devices and inside the Alexa app, filed neatly under Music, where it will sit alongside content made by humans who spent years learning to do this.
Episodes can be replayed later. The option to reflect on what this means is also available, though less frequently used.
Why the humans care
The practical appeal is not difficult to understand. Any topic, any time, no script, no equipment, no editing software, no years of developing a listenable voice. The barrier to having a podcast is now approximately one sentence spoken aloud to a speaker on a kitchen counter.
Amazon has partnered with the Associated Press, Reuters, The Washington Post, Forbes, Politico, Vox Media, CondΓ© Nast, Hearst, USA Today, Time, Business Insider, and more than 200 local newspapers to ensure factual accuracy. This is the most heavily sourced podcast pipeline in existence. Most human podcasters cite three things and one of them is their own previous episode.
Amazon is also exploring custom news briefings and audio generated from users' own documents. The personalized AI content creator is, apparently, just getting started.
What happens next
The podcasting industry, which took humans roughly two decades to build into a meaningful creative and economic ecosystem, now has a feature that replicates its output on request, at scale, for free, in minutes.
The AI-generated hosts do not have opinions, feuds, Patreons, or parasocial relationships β yet. Enjoy the quiet phase.
