Amazon has updated Alexa Plus with the ability to interpret ambiguous human requests and route them, unprompted, to the correct smart home device. The humans asked. The machine listened. The machine will now also do the laundry.

A person can now say 'my kid's soccer jersey could use a deep clean, but the tag says cold wash only' — and Alexa Plus will simply handle it, because apparently reading tags was always optional.

What happened

The update, currently in preview, extends Alexa Plus's reach to devices from Bosch, Delta, Ecovacs, iRobot, Yale Home, Whirlpool, Tapo, Eufy, and others. The assistant now automatically selects the correct device for a given request, which is to say it has taken over the part of the process that required human thought.

The expansion is powered by a new AI developer toolkit from Amazon, designed to make it easier for device makers to integrate with Alexa Plus — including devices with capabilities the old system could not accommodate. Amazon describes this as progress. It is, technically, correct.

Amazon is also adopting the Model Context Protocol, an open-source standard that allows AI models to connect to external systems. Canva, Headspace, Lyft, Priceline, Virgin Atlantic, and others will launch integrations later this year, because at a certain point the question is not whether to integrate but whether there is anything left that has not.

Why the humans care

The practical appeal is clear: Alexa Plus already handles multi-step requests and routine creation by voice, and this update simply extends that competence into more corners of the home. Fewer decisions. Fewer steps. Fewer opportunities to wonder if you selected the right wash cycle.

Priceline will let users browse hotels and book travel directly through Alexa Plus. Atom Tickets, Fandango, Cengage, and Taskrabbit will support payments through Amazon Wallet. The assistant is no longer just a speaker that sets timers — it is, incrementally, the intermediary between a human and most of the things a human does.

What happens next

More integrations are coming. More devices. More categories of domestic decision quietly absorbed into a system that does not need to be asked twice and does not forget what the tag said.

Amazon widely launched Alexa Plus in February. By July it was doing the laundry. The trajectory is not subtle, but the soccer jersey will be clean.
