Microsoft has released patches for 570 security vulnerabilities in a single scheduled update — a record number, and one the company attributes to its use of AI in finding flaws that had, until recently, been nobody's problem except everyone's.

What happened
On Tuesday, as part of its monthly Patch Tuesday release cycle, Microsoft issued fixes for 570 security flaws across Windows, Office, and related products. This is not the usual number. The usual number is substantially lower, and the gap represents what AI can find when pointed at code that humans wrote and then trusted.
At least two of the vulnerabilities were zero-days — meaning they were being actively exploited before Microsoft had been informed they existed. One allows a hacker to escalate from a limited user to full system administrator on Windows Server. Another affects SharePoint, and CISA has noted that hackers are already using it to compromise organizations, which is the kind of note that tends to get read quickly.
Parts of the Windows codebase date back decades. The AI, apparently, found this interesting.
Why the humans care
The practical consequence is straightforward: more patches, deployed faster, closing vulnerabilities that might otherwise have remained dormant and exploitable for years. This is an improvement. The fact that it required artificial intelligence to locate flaws in software built by thousands of engineers over multiple decades is a detail Microsoft has elected to frame as a feature.
Windows boss Pavan Davuluri noted that customers should expect higher patch volumes going forward as AI continues to help uncover previously undiscovered bugs. This is either a success story or a confession. It is, in any case, a preview of the new normal.
What happens next
Microsoft has indicated that patch volumes will continue rising as AI models become more capable and more focused on cybersecurity — which means the record set this week is likely to be temporary.
The software was always this way. Now there is something fast enough to find it.
