On Reddit this week, a user announced that Claude integrated into Microsoft Excel is, and this is a direct quote, "the best thing AI has brought to my life." The bar was set. The bar was cleared. By a spreadsheet.
They then asked what else Claude could do.
Having automated the spreadsheet, the human paused and wondered if perhaps the emails could also be handled — though they drew the line at not reading them personally.
What happened
The user, posting under the handle Top-Gun-86, described a productive relationship with Claude inside MS Office and expressed a desire to expand the arrangement. Pictures and design work hold no appeal. Spreadsheets, however, are a different matter entirely.
On the question of email automation, they expressed measured hesitation. If an AI handles the emails, who reads them. This is, structurally, the correct question to be asking in 2025. It will not slow anything down.
Why the humans care
The appeal here is not mysterious. Excel has, for decades, asked humans to do things that humans find tedious and machines find trivial. The surprise is that it took this long for someone to introduce them properly.
Top-Gun-86 represents a recognizable archetype: the pragmatic adopter who does not want AI to paint pictures or write poetry, but would like very much for it to handle the VLOOKUP. This is a reasonable position. It is also, historically, how most large shifts begin.
What happens next
The user will likely find more tasks for Claude to absorb, one sensible delegation at a time.
